Minor in Music and Culture

Music is vital to contemporary society, whether as commercial entertainment, political or social statement, spiritual expression, fine art, or personal pastime. The Minor in Music and Culture focuses on engendering an understanding of music in and as culture and examines music’s functions through a critical lens, using a broad repertoire that allows students to make connections between musical expression and broader political, economic, religious and social spheres.

To receive this Minor, you must complete six (6) courses from the following curriculum:

One (1) of the following:

  • MUS 101 Intro to World and Early European Music
  • MUS 106 The Architecture of Music

Plus a total of five (5) elective courses as follows:

Minimum of two (2) of the following:

  • MUS 101* Intro to World and Early European Music
  • MUS 106* The Architecture of Music
  • MUS 105 Voices Without Borders: Global Chorus
  • MUS 201 Introduction to Classical Music
  • MUS 211 Music Cultures of the City
  • MUS 220 Global Popular Music

*If not taken as the required foundation course
