Professional Accreditations
Professional accreditation is a means of testing and evaluating undergraduate educational programs and recognizing those that meet the required standards in preparing graduates for professional practice. Because its mandate is the provision of applied professional education, over the past decade the University has given priority to obtaining accreditation of its programs wherever applicable. As a result, accrediting bodies provide input to the development of curriculum in a number of Toronto Met programs.
The Daphne Cockwell School of Nursing has maintained its accreditation status with the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing since 1993. Successful accreditation signifies that the School has achieved a recognized level of ‘excellence’ based on national standards.
The School of Nutrition offers a baccalaureate degree program in Nutrition and Food. The program is an accredited program recognized by the Partnership for Dietetic Education and Practice (PDEP). Eligible graduates of PDEP accredited programs are required to complete a one-year internship or an accredited master's degree prior to becoming members of a provincial college of dietitians.
The School of Occupational and Public Health has remained a leader in undergraduate education for Canadian public health since 1960. The School offers 4 year and 2 year (fast track) undergraduate degree programs in public health and occupational health and safety. The public health and safety program is the oldest and only one of seven programs accredited by the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors. This allows graduates to meet the educational requirements for certification as a public health inspector (environmental health practitioner). In addition, the occupational health and safety program is recognized by the Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals as meeting the educational requirements for certification as a Canadian Registered Safety Professional.
The School of Social Work’s baccalaureate degree program is accredited by the Canadian Association for Social Work Education. Graduates and students are eligible for membership in the Ontario Association of Social Workers. Graduates are eligible for membership in the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers. Graduates are eligible to apply to one-year, post-BSW, Master of Social Work programs across Canada.
The School of Urban and Regional Planning’s four-year and two-year undergraduate degree and graduate degree programs are recognized by the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP). The accreditation means graduates have a shorter time frame required in becoming full members. The CIP is the recognized body for professional planners in Canada. These programs are also accredited by the Ontario Professional Planners Institute (OPPI).
The Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) currently offers eight accredited engineering programs. The baccalaureate degree programs in Aerospace, Biomedical, Chemical, Civil, Computer, Electrical, Industrial, and Mechanical Engineering are accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB) of Engineers Canada. For the new baccalaureate degree program in Mechatronics Engineering, accreditation by CEAB will be sought at the time of its first graduating class. Like graduates from other accredited engineering programs, TMU engineering students, after completion of their degree requirements, must acquire four years of relevant experience and successfully complete the Professional Practice Examination of the provincial licensing and regulating body, the Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO), before they can obtain a professional engineering license. Access to graduate school is also enhanced with a degree from an accredited program.
TMU’s professional program in architecture comprises a four-year Bachelor of Architectural Science degree plus the two-year Master of Architecture degree. This program became fully accredited by the Canadian Architectural Certification Board (CACB) in 2010. In 2019, the program was re-accredited for a full six-year term. In Canada, the Canadian Architectural Certification Board (CACB) is the sole agency authorized by the Regulatory Organizations of Architecture in Canada (ROAC) to accredit Canadian professional degree programs in architecture for the purposes of architectural licensure.
The Canadian Society for Chemistry (CSC) develops, coordinates and manages the accreditation for undergraduate chemistry programs, setting and maintaining national standards of education and promoting the portability of the qualifications of graduates from such programs. The Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and Bachelor of Science in Chemistry Co-operative degrees have received full accreditation from the CSC.
The School of Accounting and Finance (SAF) in the Ted Rogers School of Management is recognized by the Chartered Professional Accountants of Ontario (CPA Ontario) under the CPA National Recognition and Accreditation Standards for Post-Secondary Institutions. The recognized program features courses provided through a combination of undergraduate courses and completion of the School of Accounting and Finance Professional Master’s Diploma in Accounting. CPA Accreditation allows successful graduates of the Professional Master’s Diploma in Accounting who have completed their Bachelor of Commerce from the School of Accounting and Finance - Accounting major to complete the core and elective modules of the CPA Professional Education Program (PEP) with advanced standing into the CPA PEP Capstone 1 and 2 modules. Upon successful completion of these modules, students will be eligible to write the Common Final Examination (CFE).
The School of Accounting and Finance (SAF) in the Ted Rogers School of Management has been accepted into the Chartered Financial Analyst® (CFA) Institute University Recognition Program since 2014. The Bachelor of Commerce program (major in Finance) has been acknowledged as incorporating at least 70 percent of the CFA Program Candidate Body of Knowledge (CBOK) and placing emphasis on the CFA Institute Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice within the program. This program positions students well to obtain the Chartered Financial Analyst® designation, which has become the most respected and recognized investment credential in the world.
The Ted Rogers School of Business Management offers courses that are accredited by the Human Resources Professional Association (HRPA) and are required to qualify to write the National Knowledge Examination (NKE). The purpose of the coursework requirement is to ensure that potential Certified Human Resources Professionals (CHRP) have the required discipline‐specific knowledge foundation that CHRPs must possess. HRPA maintains a School Search Tool which lists all courses that have been approved by HRPA at the Ted Rogers School of Business Management.
In 2022, the Ted Rogers School of Business Management, the Ted Rogers School of Information Technology Management, the Ted Rogers School of Hospitality and Tourism Management, the Ted Rogers School of Accounting and Finance and the Ted Rogers School of Retail Management were re-accredited for a five year period by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) for both our undergraduate and graduate degree programs. AACSB accreditation is the hallmark of excellence in business education and is based on a mission-based assessment of 9 standards. The Bachelor of Health Administration and Master of Health Administration (Community Care) programs are exempt from AACSB accreditation, but are accredited by the Association of University Programs in Health Administration and recognized by the Canadian College of Health Leaders, respectively.
The School of Health Services Management (SHSM) delivers the Bachelor of Health Administration (BHA) program, which has been certified by the Association of University Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA) for more than 20 years. It was the first Canadian undergraduate program to be formally recognized by the AUPHA. The AUPHA is a global network "dedicated to the improvement of healthcare delivery through excellence in healthcare management and policy education.” The Master of Health Administration (Community Care) (MHA(CC)) is recognized by the Canadian College of Health Leaders. Successful MHA(CC) candidates are eligible for advanced standing for the Certified Health Executive (CHE) designation.
In 2017, the Ted Rogers School of Hospitality and Tourism Management (SHTM) obtained SMART Premium accreditation by Tourism HR Canada. SHTM is the first university level program to receive this national recognition for demonstrating tourism-related programming that exceeds industry standards as envisioned in the SMART accreditation program. The SMART Accreditation Program aims to provide an opportunity for post-secondary public or private institutions and corporate training providers to demonstrate that their programming meets or exceeds industry standards.
The Toronto Met School of Interior Design offers a university degree program accredited by (CIDA) Council for Interior Design Accreditation, the recognized accrediting body in North America for interior design schools. For students admitted to the program in 2023 or earlier, the four-year BID program is accredited. Accreditation of the program ensures that the quality of education is maintained at a level that prepares students for professional licensure.
