Library Assistant

Contract length: September 14, 2026 to February 6, 2027
Hours of work per week: 36.25, 5 days a week On campus (In-person) at the Brampton campus, School of Medicine Building. This position may work Monday to Friday 8 am to 4 pm or Tuesday to Friday 8 am to 4 pm, and Saturdays 10 am to 6 pm, based on operational requirements and subject to change.
Position type: Short-term temporary (STT) position
Rate of pay: $29.50 per hour

The opportunity

The TMU Libraries seeks a highly motivated and organized Library assistant to provide high-quality, inclusive front-line daily operational support at TMU Libraries newest branch library the Bikram S. Dhillon and Family Medical Library. The Library assistant’s key duties will include in-person and online customer service, monitoring and maintaining the physical order of the medical library’s facilities, materials, and resources, known item searches, and assisting with medical library initiatives and special projects. Under the guidance of the Department Head and working with the Lead Hands and other Medical library team members, the Library assistant will support users in accessing the Medical library services and resources, provide assistance in identifying and responding to and reporting issues, and ensure consistent quality of services through maintenance, observation and presence. Additionally, the Library Assistant will collaborate and assist with library events, projects, and initiatives that promote an engaged welcoming campus community.

Qualifications

  • Completion of a 1-year post-secondary program.
  • Minimum of 1 year of relevant experience in customer service with a demonstrated commitment to customer service
  • Experience in problem-solving public services and effective communication skills
  • Experience with library systems
  • Previous work experience in a team environment and without supervision
  • Attention to detail skills are required to collect, organize, shelve, and maintain all library materials in correct sequences using alphanumeric systems
  • Basic troubleshooting skills to assist patrons with machine related issues. 
  • Computer skills to operate various library-specific, university-specific, and office software applications.
