Principle Investigator

Dr. Ali Tavallaei

Ali Tavallaei, Ph.D., P.Eng.

Dr. Tavallaei is a Canada Research Chair in Systems and Devices for Cardiovascular Interventions at Toronto Metropolitan University. He is an Associate Professor at the Department of Electrical, Computer, and Biomedical Engineering. He is also a visiting Scientist at Sunnybrook Research Institute, an Associate Professor (status-only) at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Toronto, and an Affiliate Scientist at the iBEST Research Centre. Dr. Tavallaei has been engaged with multiple medical device startups, and he is currently the President and co-founder of Magellan Biomedical.

Sina Keshavarz

Sina Keshavarz, MSc

Sina (Mohammad Mahdi) Keshavarz completed his undergraduate studies in Mechanical Eng. at Isfahan University of Technology. Currently, he is a Ph.D. student, and his research focuses on developing an image-guided navigation platform for minimally invasive cardiovascular interventions.

Srikanth Reddy Mandhumula

Srikanth Reddy Mandhumula, MSc

Srikanth Reddy completed his undergraduate studies in Mathematics, Physics, and Statistics at the University College of Science, followed by his MSc in Physics at Osmania University in Hyderabad, India. His research focuses on the design, development, and control of robotic systems for minimally invasive interventions and particularly for applications in cardiovascular procedures.

Mahdieh Samadi

Mahdieh (Mahna) Samadi, MSc

Mahdieh completed her BSc and MSc in the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at the University of Tabriz. For her PhD work at the MDS Lab, Mahna will be advancing modeling, control, and system parameter identification for robotics systems utilizing expandable cable-driven parallel mechanisms for applications in minimally invasive interventions. 

Giacomo Loparco

Giacomo Loparco, BSc

Giacomo Loparco completed his BSc in Software Engineering at McMaster University. His MSc research focuses on enabling surgeons to teloperatively perform surgery using an augmented reality interface.

Alysha Prem

Alysha Prem, BSc

Alysha Prem completed her BSc in Biomedical Engineering at Toronto Metropolitan University. Her MSc research focuses on the design, and development of novel minimally invasive nuclear imaging tools for applications in cancer biopsy and therapy guidance. 

Rene Gilliland-Rocque

Rene Gilliland-Rocque, BSc

Rene Gilliland-Rocque did his undergraduate studies in Biomedical Engineering at the Toronto Metropolitan University. Currently, he is an MSc student, and his research focuses on developing electrical impedance-based methods for tracking of interventional devices for minimally invasive interventions.

Youngjae Lee

Youngjae Lee is a Mechanical Engineering undergraduate student at Toronto Metropolitan University. Youngjae assists in designing, developing, and testing a dexterous robotic hand for medical surgery applications.

Ahmed Tabl

Ahmed Tabl

Ahmed Tabl is a senior Computer Engineering student at Toronto Metropolitan University with a strong interest in hardware systems, embedded design, and robotics. Currently he is working on the control and teleoperation of the robotic hand for applications in telesurgery.
