At Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU), the safety and well-being of our community members is a top priority. Sexual violence is a serious problem that needs attention and intervention – not only in the ways we respond, but in how we work to prevent it throughout society and within institutions. We are committed to fostering a culture of consent and to building safe and secure university environments that are free of sexual violence and harassment of any kind.

The university’s Sexual Violence Policy reflects our collective commitment to addressing all forms of sexual violence in our community and to promoting a culture of consent.

Sexual Violence Policy Review currently underway

TMU began the review of the Sexual Violence Policy in October 2023. This is part of a regular review process required by the Ministry of Colleges and Universities. The review will help maintain our commitment to excellence and fairness of process and ensure that the policy continues to reflect an institutional commitment to address sexual violence within our community in a trauma-informed way.

Thank you to all community members who participated in consultations

Phase one, held in fall 2023, engaged the TMU community through an online survey and town hall consultations. Feedback sessions with administrators of the Sexual Violence Policy, subject-matter experts, faculty, contract lecturer and staff unions, student unions and other stakeholders were also held. Phase two commenced in winter 2024, inviting TMU community members to review the draft policy and offer feedback through a second online survey. Additional input was gathered through feedback sessions with student and employee unions.

Policy currently being finalized and will be presented to the Board of Governors

The revised policy is being finalized and will be posted after it is presented to the Board of Governors in 2024.

The Sexual Violence Policy was first approved by the Board of Governors in 2015.

In 2019, following extensive consultations with the university community, the policy was reviewed, revised and approved to comply with the amendments to the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities Act (2017).

In September 2021, the Ontario government released a Provincial Announcement and updated regulations (external link)  (Ontario Regulation 131/16) with new requirements for sexual violence policies at publicly assisted colleges and universities. In compliance with regulatory requirements, TMU updated the Sexual Violence Policy to add two new clauses in December 2021.

In December 2022, the Ontario government passed Bill 26, Strengthening Post-secondary Institutions and Students Act (external link) , with amendments to the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities Act respecting sexual misconduct toward students by employees in universities. In compliance with these legislative amendments, TMU introduced new Guidelines under the Sexual Violence Policy: Consensual Romatic or Sexual Relationships and Activities in June 2023.
