Finding the human side of technology

“The goal of any technology is to make humans live a better life. So, any work has to start with caring for the user.”

Lesley Campbell

New growing system from TMU profs to revolutionize food production

“By listening to the plants – for instance, if we see that they need more or less of a certain nutrient, light or a change in temperature, we can quickly respond to help them thrive.”

Math professor contributes to solving Hadwiger's conjecture

“Hadwiger’s is the problem in graph colouring, it is the one everyone wants to solve and the one that all the best minds in graph theory have made partial progress towards over the years. It's one that I never thought I'd make substantial progress on, so I am very proud of that.”

Canada Research Chair finds new approaches to complex lung conditions

“You're not getting a lot of information about the muscle when you're just looking at one slice, so 3D will allow us to answer completely different questions that can't be addressed with the current methods”

Rising Stars

In 2024, the Faculty of Science welcomed four new professors between the Computer Science and Mathematics departments: Professors Navid Nasr Esfahani, Claude Gravel, Samuel Asante Gyamerah and Glaucia Melo dos Santos.

Whether by optimizing human-AI interactions, advancing cryptography research, improving data security or helping farmers cope with unpredictable weather, these new faculty members bring expertise across a broad range of real-world applications.

Remembering Professor Jahan Tavakkoli

“His legacy lives on through his graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, colleagues and friends. Above all else, his love of his family was true and deep. We shall miss him, and he remains in our hearts as a scholar with a deep core of humanity.”
