Message from the Dean

Dean David Cramb

I am pleased to share our 2024 Year in Review, which highlights the Faculty of Science’s continuing excellence in research, education and community engagement.

We made great strides for women in STEM, with notable examples from professor Lesley Campbell’s team’s work developing an innovative berry-growing system, to professor Michelle Delcourt’s significant progress in solving Hadwiger’s Conjecture, to the development of two new graduate scholarships

Our students continue to make us proud. For instance, Danielle Olding won the top prize at the FACIT's Falcons' Fortunes pitch competition for a drug targeting ovarian cancer, and Ummayah Saleh made significant contributions to the growth of the Peer Academic Leaders in Science (PALS) program for first-year science students.

Our commitment to community was highlighted through solar eclipse events hosted by SciXchange and numerous Indigenous STEM moments, covering topics such as astronomy, hide tanning and medicine.

This year was also notable for what our community lost. The untimely passing of professor and Physics Chair Jahan Tavakkoli reminded us to emulate his passion for research, teaching, and, above all, supporting our students.

I invite you to browse through our Year in Review and read about the highlights that make our faculty so special.

Sincerely,

David Cramb
Dean, Faculty of Science
