Next Generation

Ryerson students are the future leaders of research and innovation, and the university actively celebrates, promotes and supports their scholarly, research and creative endeavours. Our programs and partnerships create opportunities for students to learn in real-world environments through placements, internships and other opportunities. 

Developing Talent 


Mitacs

Mitacs is a national, not-for-profit organization that supports industrial and social innovation in Canada by pairing undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral researchers with fellowships or internships at host organizations in the private or public sector.  

Sarah Ariano, a PhD candidate in Environmental Science Management, received support from the Mitacs Accelerate program, working with professor Claire Oswald (Geography and Environmental Studies) and the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority to map and characterize the historic watercourses of the City of Toronto.

Julia Gropper, a master of Business Administration student, received support from the Mitacs Accelerate program to conduct research to identify the key skills required for sales professionals in the modern sales environment. The work is part of a broad study conducted by professor Karen Peesker (Hospitality and Tourism Management) with the Canadian Professional Sales Association.


Zahra Jandaghian
, a postdoctoral fellow in Building Engineering, received a Mitacs Accelerate fellowship to support professor Umberto Berardi (Architectural Science) and partner organization Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation in an investigation into the Greater Toronto Area’s green infrastructure’s impact on urban climate, air quality and human health.

Ying Li, a postdoctoral fellow in Medical Physics, received support from the Mitacs Accelerate program to work closely with Synex Medical Inc. and their academic supervisor, professor Yuan Xu (Physics), on a project that seeks to improve the signal-to-noise ratio of a mobile nuclear magnetic resonance system that monitors medical biomarkers in real time.

 

Student Honours & Awards

Faculty of Arts

Christian Hui, a Policy Studies PhD student, was a recipient of the 2020 Canadian Institute of Health Research’s Vanier Canada Graduate Student scholarship. 

Faculty of Communication and Design

Victoria Anderson-Gardner, a student in the School of Image Arts, was chosen by renowned Abenaki filmmaker Alanis Obomsawin to be the recipient of the Glenn Gould Foundation’s $15,000 Protégé Prize. 

Faculty of Community Services

Frances Grout-Brown and Leorah Klein, graduate students from the School of Urban and Regional Planning, teamed up with graduate students from the University of Toronto and York University to win $50,000 USD in the prestigious ULI / Gerald D. Hines Student Urban Design Competition.

Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science

Farokh Laqa Kakar, a Civil Engineering PhD student, was a recipient of a 2020 Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council’s Vanier Canada Graduate Student scholarship.

Faculty of Law

Yana Fox and Anthony Brum took first place at the Canadian Client Consultation Competition and will represent Canada at the international competition at Swansea University, Wales.

Faculty of Science

Eno Hysi, a Biomedical Physics PhD graduate, received a Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship –  the first ever Ryerson graduate student to be awarded this prestigious honour.

Ted Rogers School of Management

Eric Muellejans, a student in the Business Technology Management program, was selected to be a Schwarzman Scholar at Beijing’s Tsinghua University, the first Ryerson student to be awarded this international fellowship.
