Women’s empowerment is important at any time - but in the month of March especially, we’ve got you covered! Get ready for an action-packed month with these TMU events -- including International Women’s Day activities and the U SPORTS Canadian men’s national hockey championships – coming up in March.

March 1*

Women on Weights

Looking to get more comfortable in the weight room? Not sure how to use the equipment? Want to learn how to weight train safely and effectively? If you said “yes” to any of the above, and you’re a female-identifying TMU student, this workshop series is for you! 

In five sessions, beginning Friday, March 1, gain the knowledge and the confidence you need to begin your muscle conditioning journey with a trained and experienced female personal trainer. 

*This is a 5-part event series beginning March 1

Empowering Women in Academia event series

The Empowering Women in Academia series is being held to recognize and celebrate the contributions to academic excellence made by women here at TMU. These events, hosted and sponsored by the Office of the Provost and Vice-President, Academic, will foster mentoring, networking and collaboration among female-identifying and non-binary academic staff. 

March 7 

International Student Chats: Ask Me Anything

In this virtual event, meet International Student Ambassadors and hear about their unique experiences at TMU. This session will give a better understanding of academics, extracurriculars and living in Toronto through the perspective of a current international undergraduate student. From program insights to navigating Canadian winters, financial tips, and beyond – get the answers to any burning questions you have.

March 8 

Networking and Connecting: An International Women's Day Gathering

Celebrate International Women’s Day at a networking event to build connections, celebrate and uplift women and gender diverse people.

Tanya (Toni) De Mello (vice-president, Equity and Community Inclusion) and Roberta Iannacito-Provenzano (provost and vice-president, academic) will engage in a dynamic conversation and discuss strategies to cultivate and sustain a network of solidarity.

Everyone is welcome to attend. Light refreshments will be offered.

TMU Hosts U SPORTS National Men’s Hockey Championships (external link) 

Come cheer on the TMU Bold on March 14 at 7 p.m. in the U SPORTS national men’s hockey championships – right here at the Mattamy Athletic Centre! This is the first time the championship will be hosted in Toronto in 27 years. Bring your friends and family to experience the best Canadian men’s university hockey - right here on home ice.

Escaping the Taliban: In Conversation with a Female Afghan Judge

Since the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan in 2021, female judges throughout the country have lost their jobs, had their lives threatened and been forced to evacuate or go into hiding.

Join an important conversation with a female Afghan judge who arrived in Canada as a government sponsored-refugee in February 2023. She will share stories about life in Afghanistan before 2021, why she became a judge, her escape from the Taliban and her future plans in Canada.

Cooltural 2024

Cooltural, a Language and Intercultural Relations (LIR) event series featuring the intersection of culture, language, food and arts, returns Tuesday, March 19 and Wednesday, March 20, 2024! All are welcome! Event includes intercultural food tasting, language tables, shot films with director Q&A, music in the city and more. 

March 22

Generative AI & Research

Would you like to learn more about using a generative AI tool, like ChatGPT for your research? Before diving into the world of AI, it's important to have a deeper understanding of this technology. In this workshop, you will learn: what is generative AI and can you use it? What is AI good for and what is it not so good for? What makes for an effective prompt? Join on March 22 from 1-2 p.m.

TMU 3MT® (Three-Minute Thesis) Competition

The TMU 3MT® Competition is back for 2024! Drop into POD 250 on March 27 from 12-3 p.m. to see graduate students communicate their scholarly research and creativity in three minutes or less to a panel of non-specialist judges for cash prizes.
