Dr. Sedef Arat-Koc

Sedef teaches in the Department of Politics and Public Administration and the M.A. Program in Immigration and Settlement Studies. She received her BA at Bogazici University in Istanbul, Turkey, MA at University of Waterloo and PhD at the University of Toronto. Prof. Arat-Koc’s research and publications on the Middle East have focused on politics of imperialism in the Middle East and contemporary politics and society in Turkey. Her research on Turkey focuses on a variety of topics: Turkish “whiteness” as a cultural and class identity in the context of neoliberalism and post-cold war geopolitics; “neo-Ottomanism in Turkish foreign policy; and the politics of populism. Prof. Arat-Koc also has research and teaching on the Canadian context, specifically on gender, immigration policy and citizenship; and on racialization of Arabs and Muslims.
