Global Migration Institute supports externally funded postdoctoral fellowship applications to host top-quality researchers

We are pleased to invite researchers who are working in the broader area of migration and integration studies to submit an expression of interest for externally funded fellowships to be hosted by the Global Migration Institute at Toronto Metropolitan University in Toronto, Canada.

If selected, you will receive support from the Global Migration Institute in preparing and applying to the externally funded postdoctoral fellowship of your choice.

We welcome applications under the following thematic areas:

  • Cities and Migration
  • Citizenship and Belonging
  • The Governance of Migration in a Globalizing World
  • Labour Migration
  • Migration and Health

Proposals should align with one or more of these priority areas, demonstrating their relevance to the broader goals of the Institute.

How to apply

To apply, submit an application package via this online application form (external link)  by 11:59 PM EDT April 26, 2025.

The package must include:

  • Short CV (2-4 pages)
  • Brief outline of research proposal (1-2 pages)

Your research proposal outline must include a clear statement of what you intend to study and show how it fits with one or more of the thematic priority areas of the Global Migration Institute. The process is competitive and only a handful of applicants will be contacted for further preparation of a submission to one of the schemes outlined below. 

Shortlisted applicants will be informed by mid May 2026. Before applying, please ensure that you meet all eligibility requirements for your preferred fellowship opportunity.

The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Postdoctoral Fellowships support the most promising Canadian new scholars in the social sciences and humanities, and assist them in establishing a research base at an important time in their research careers.

The objective of the Postdoctoral Fellowships is to enhance the creative and innovative potential of researchers holding a PhD and who wish to acquire new skills through advanced training, international, interdisciplinary and inter-sectoral mobility.

The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Postdoctoral Fellowships program provides support to a core of the most promising researchers at a pivotal time in their careers. The fellowships are intended to secure a supply of highly qualified Canadians with leading-edge scientific and research skills for Canadian industry, government and academic institutions.

NSERC supports research whose major challenges lie in the natural sciences and engineering, other than the health sciences. The intended objective(s) of your research must primarily be to advance knowledge in one or more natural sciences and engineering disciplines.

The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Fellowship Program provides support for highly-qualified candidates at the postdoctoral or post-health professional degree stages to add to their experience by engaging in health research either in Canada or abroad.

Mitacs is a Canadian not-for-profit organization that works with institutions, companies and the federal and provincial governments to promote and support innovation. Postdoctoral opportunities available through Mitacs include the following programs: Globalink Research Award, Accelerate, Elevate and the Canadian Science Policy Fellowship.

The goal of the program is to build a more diverse and inclusive academic environment at TMU, and support the flourishing of Black scholarship. In particular, this program seeks to expand and advance Black scholarship and intellectual traditions, and support the academic endeavours of the Black community.
