Commitment to Truth and Reconciliation
The Global Migration Institute is based in Toronto, also known as Tkaronto, on the traditional territories of the Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee, and Wendat Peoples, and within the Dish With One Spoon Territory. Through our work we are committed to respecting Indigenous histories and knowledge, as well as decolonial practices.
As part of Toronto Metropolitan University, the Global Migration Institute aligns with the university’s ongoing commitments to Truth and Reconciliation, including its efforts to address the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Calls to Action through teaching, research, governance, and community engagement. These commitments are grounded in long-term institutional change, accountability, and partnership with Indigenous communities.
While the Global Migration Institute is based in Canada, our mandate as a global migration institute requires us to engage critically with the impacts of settler colonialism worldwide. We recognize that migration, displacement, borders, and citizenship are deeply shaped by colonial histories and their ongoing effects across diverse global contexts. Our commitment to Truth and Reconciliation is therefore both local and global.
We approach this work with sincerity and recognize the broader historical and political contexts in which our research is produced.
