Leveraging the skills and talents of newcomers to Canada

Migration is as old as humanity itself. In the 21st century, it continues to shape societies in Canada and around the world. People move for many reasons - to work, to study, to reunite with family, or to find safety and stability - and their movement has political, social, and cultural impacts on both receiving countries and countries of origin.

Today, migration has been revolutionized through increased global interconnectedness and advanced digital technologies. According to the United Nations Population Division Estimates from 2024, a record 304 million people lived in a country other than their country of birth, representing about 3.7 percent of the world’s 8.2 billion people. In a world grappling with uncertainty, conflict, violence, climate change, and disasters that will only serve to increase the numbers of migrants around the world, understanding migration is critical. The Global Migration Institute at Toronto Metropolitan University is dedicated to producing rigorous research that will address the multifaceted impacts of migration, helping to inform decision-making and effective policy responses.

But we can’t do it alone.

From displacement due to climate change and conflict to the experiences of migrants seeking better opportunities and safety, the world needs evidence-based migration research now more than ever.

Your gift will fuel research that improves how migration is understood, governed, and experienced, strengthening responses to migration at local, national, and global levels.
