Building on a record of success

From the day it opened its doors in May 2011, the Centre for Urban Energy (CUE) at Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson University) has strived to find sustainable and affordable solutions to the pressing energy problems of today and tomorrow.

Now, 10 years later, we can take pride in how much we’ve accomplished.

Through a decade of exploring, developing and commercializing innovative, cost-effective and practical clean-energy solutions and technologies, CUE has worked with its industry partners to deliver tangible benefits to our economy and the environment.

But, as we look ahead, we know the next 10 years will be different. We’re entering a defining decade for our planet. That presents an opportunity and a responsibility for CUE to play an even greater role in shaping a better future for our cities and communities.

2020 was challenging, yet CUE emerged from it as optimistic as ever

Here are a few reasons why:

We enjoy the strong support of industry partners. Our original sponsors — Hydro One, the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) and Toronto Hydro — continue to invest and trust in our leadership and vision. Over the past decade, we’ve attracted other important strategic partners such as Schneider Electric, Tata Power and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).

Our role is more vital than ever. We already knew there was an urgent need to rethink how we generate, store, distribute, transport, consume and pay for energy in response to the climate crisis and Canada’s ambitious net-zero emissions targets. But now, there is also a part to play in helping the economy to “build back better” through a green recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The industry looks to us for highly qualified personnel. With more than 1,000 alumni, CUE’s programs have ensured a steady stream of top talent for the energy sector. As we strive to achieve a zero-carbon future and a green economy, there is an ever greater need for individuals with advanced technical and analytical skills to mobilize knowledge and drive positive change.

10 Years On of the Centre for Urban Energy

We've got a great story to tell

Throughout 2021, CUE will mark its first decade under the banner of 10 Years On. It's an opportunity for us to find ways to celebrate how much we've accomplished - and share our vision of what's to come.
