Message from the Vice-President, Research and Innovation

Our 2022–2023 annual report captures a year of significant progress across Toronto Metropolitan University’s (TMU) scholarly, research and creative (SRC) enterprise. It is my pleasure to share with you the achievements of our faculty and student researchers, whose work is shaping dialogue and driving change in Canada and internationally.

This year marked important milestones for the university. The approval of TMU’s School of Medicine is a transformative step for our institution and for health care in Ontario. It positions us to build a collaborative, community-anchored research ecosystem that links clinical insight with technological innovation and responds directly to the evolving needs of patients and practitioners. In addition, TMU received $98.6 million from the highly competitive Canada First Research Excellence Fund, marking the first time our university has secured support through this program and the largest research grant in our history. This investment will enable TMU researchers to lead Migrant Integration in the Mid-21st Century: Bridging Divides, a seven-year interdisciplinary program examining the challenges and opportunities of immigration and integration. This landmark award affirms TMU’s strength in addressing one of today’s most urgent global issues and will drive research that supports newcomers and strengthens communities across Canada.

In Research Infosource’s rankings of Canada’s Top 50 Research Universities, their five-year spotlight for 2018 to 2022 highlighted TMU’s exceptional research income growth for both not-for-profit and corporate categories. Our strength in forming successful collaboration and partnerships is key to advancing ideas and innovative solutions across sectors. TMU was further recognized by the federal Dimensions program, underlining our commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) in our research community, which is championed by many of the researchers in this report.

In this report, you will encounter work that ranges from pioneering solar technologies and immune-system science to responsible AI and inclusive frameworks for migration and integration. This research illustrates the breadth of inquiry across our campus and the momentum driving TMU’s trajectory of success.
