Associate Director, PGME Simulation for Anesthesia Residency Program

About the School of Medicine

It’s time to transform medical education. The Opportunity

Lead the planning, development, and delivery of simulation program needs for the Anesthesia Residency Program within the Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) portfolio at the Toronto Metropolitan University’s (TMU) School of Medicine. Plays a pivotal role in shaping the program’s curriculum and overall design while ensuring alignment with institutional goals and healthcare priorities. The Associate Director fosters collaboration with the Simulation & Anatomy Lab team and clinical sites, and develops the simulation curriculum for the Anesthesia residency program. Committed to advancing the SoM’s focus on generalism, equity, diversity, and inclusion, the Associate Director ensures the overall integrity of the simulation components of the Anesthesia Residency Program in accordance with relevant accreditation standards mandated by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) or the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC). 

Qualifications

Job Qualifications

Minimum level of education, certification, and licensure required

  • Completion of a Doctor of Medicine Degree or equivalent medical degree;
  • Must have or be eligible for an appointment to the TMU Clinical Faculty;
  • Must have or be eligible to hold an appointment at a TMU medicine-affiliated clinical partner institution or academic health centre.

Minimum number of years and type/area of experience required

  • A minimum of 3 years of relevant experience as a simulation educator within a clinical, medical education, or healthcare setting, with demonstrated experience in designing and delivering simulation-based education (including curriculum development and innovation); and
  • A minimum of 3 three years of experience in medical education, with evidence of administrative and curricular responsibilities in a Medical School educational activity or equivalent PGME program.

Required certifications, designation or licences to complete the key responsibilities of the position

  • A valid and current license to practice medicine in Ontario or another Canadian jurisdiction;
  • Certified as a clinician by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) within Anesthesia.

Required skills and demonstrated knowledge

  • Knowledge and understanding of the implementation of competency-based education;
  • Superior conceptual, analytical and problem-solving skills, with excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • In-depth knowledge of adult education principles and theory at local, national and international levels, with demonstrated ability to apply these in simulation-based medical education;
  • Demonstrated ability to design, plan, implement, and evaluate complex programs and projects, while managing multiple priorities and meeting tight deadlines;
  • Commitment to applying equity, diversity, inclusion (EDI), anti-racism, decolonization, and disability justice principles into program leadership, curriculum design, and educational practice;
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate diverse perspectives and experiences using an intersectional approach, with self-awareness of one’s own identity, biases, prejudices, power, and privilege;
  • Ability to engage in and facilitate constructive and sometimes difficult conversations, especially in the context of equity and diversity;
  • Excellent presentation skills and be comfortable making presentations to small and medium-sized groups;
  • Demonstrated creativity, innovation, and strategic thinking, with agility to adapt in a fast-paced, collaborative team environment.

Physical Effort

  • This position requires routine physical activity most of the time. The incumbent is frequently using a computer/technology while composing and preparing reports, documents and letters for extended periods of time. Physical movement may also be required for extended periods of time while participating in special events and simulation facilitation.

Working Conditions

  • The majority of the incumbent's time in this role will be spent in an office environment. The incumbent is required to meet multiple and conflicting deadlines on a regular ongoing basis. 
  • The incumbent may be required to periodically travel for meetings or program delivery (e.g. simulation facilitation).
