Getting Around

Taxis/ Rideshare

The two main taxi companies are Beck Taxi (external link, opens in new window)  (416-751-5555) and Diamond Taxi (external link, opens in new window)  (416-366-6868). Both companies take bookings by phone or mobile app, and there are always taxis waiting at the airport.

In addition, ridesharing services such as Uber (external link, opens in new window)  or Lyft (external link, opens in new window)  are also present in Toronto, and in general, the fares are more reasonable for these platforms. Besides, the unified structure of the Uber app enables the added convenience of being able to use the same app across countries.

A ride from Toronto Pearson International Airport to the Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson University) campus would typically cost ~$60-70 for a taxi and ~$40-45 for an Uber.

If you are arriving from Canadian and US cities, you may prefer to use Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (YTZ) (external link, opens in new window) , which is a smaller airport located on the Toronto Islands. Cab fare from Billy Bishop to downtown is approximately $20.

Public Transportation

Toronto is well connected through a network of bus, subway and streetcar routes, all operated by the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC).

You can use Google Maps (external link, opens in new window)  or mobile transit apps (for e.g. Transit (external link, opens in new window) ), or the TTC Trip Planner (external link, opens in new window)  to find bus/subway/streetcar times, routes, and stop locations. A regular cash fare is $3.25 and the drivers do not provide change. After paying the fare, please remember to ask for a transfer ticket which is valid on any TTC vehicle for the following 2 hours.

If you intend on using the TTC frequently, it is also possible to obtain a PRESTO Card (external link, opens in new window)  which is a pay-as-you-go reloadable alternative to cash fares. The fares are not significantly cheaper ($3.20 instead of $3.25) and there is a $6 one-time fee for purchasing the card, but the added convenience of not obtaining and showing transfer tickets may be valuable. In addition, should you plan on exploring the nearby cities of Toronto, a PRESTO card can be used across different transit systems.

Car Rentals

Several companies offer in-airport car rentals (external link, opens in new window) , while other companies offer shuttles to nearby rental locations. Information about parking on campus can be found by clicking here (opens in new window) .

Food

Toronto is one of the most culturally diverse communities in the world, and as such most cuisines are a stone’s throw away from the Toronto Metropolitan (formerly Ryerson) Campus. If you are in the mood for some stone-oven pizza then Blaze Pizza (external link, opens in new window)  is a good fit, whereas if you want to discuss the Sunflower conjecture with like-minded individuals then Balzac’s (external link, opens in new window)  has traditionally held the honor of being the place for musings.

A list of some good restaurants in the area is:

Adega (external link, opens in new window) - Portuguese - 4 minutes' walk

Barberian’s Steak House (external link, opens in new window)  - 2 minutes' walk

Donatello Restaurant (external link, opens in new window) - Italian - 4 minutes' walk

Things to Do

Tourism

There are a number of sights and things to do in Toronto, a list headed by the famous CN Tower (external link, opens in new window) . Depending on your interests, the Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada (external link, opens in new window)  or the St. Lawrence Market (external link, opens in new window)  are worth exploring. If nature or long walks tickle your fantasy then the Toronto Islands (external link, opens in new window)  provide an escape, whereas if you are into museums and collectibles, then the Royal Ontario Museum (external link, opens in new window)  and the Aga Khan Museum (external link, opens in new window)  are good options.
