Film History and Criticism I

This course surveys the history of global cinema from the its beginnings to the dissolution of the studio system (approximately 1905-1960). Students are trained to research and critically analyze films within their historical context. Topics include: the emergence of the classical Hollywood studio system, national cinemas, the transition to sound, avant-garde and experimental cinema, and issues of representation including race and gender.
