About Dr. Sven Lilge

Dr. Sven Lilge

I’m an Assistant Professor in Computer Science at TMU. My research focuses on continuum and soft robotics — flexible robots that can operate in tight, cluttered, and unstructured spaces that traditional robots usually cannot access. Inspired by how animals like snakes and elephants move, my lab designs robots that can bend, twist, and adapt to their surroundings, using algorithms for modeling, state estimation, and motion control to operate robustly and autonomously. Our goal is to apply these systems to real-world challenges such as industrial inspection, minimally invasive surgery, and exploration of hazardous or disaster-affected environments, creating technologies that can make a meaningful impact on society.

Teaching Philosophy

I’m passionate about working with curious and motivated students and sharing the excitement of robotics and computer science through hands-on learning and research involvement. My goal is to create an inclusive, collaborative, and experiential environment where students feel inspired to explore, experiment, and innovate. I view training as more than the transmission of technical knowledge — it’s about cultivating critical thinking, creativity, teamwork, and communication skills, empowering students to become independent researchers and confident professionals ready for success in academia and industry.
