For many of us, the first sign of the seriousness of the global pandemic was the abrupt suspension of the NBA season in March 2020. Other professional leagues followed, and then struggled with new rules and regulations as the world grappled with Covid. As we enter a post-pandemic era, industry experts will gather to discuss how professional, amateur and varsity sports can rise and thrive in the new normal.
Moderator
Justin Bobb is the Director of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion for Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE) with a focus on the development and execution of team strategies for Toronto Maple Leafs, Toronto FC and Toronto Argos. In addition to his role at MLSE, Justin has coached basketball at the community, high school, club and college level for over 12 years. Justin has an extensive background in social impact through community and sport development, as well as the social housing sector, all while using sport as a tool of engagement to support youth facing barriers. Justin is a graduate of Ryerson University with a B.A. in Sociology.
Speakers
Dr. Cheri L. Bradish is an industry leader and pioneer in sport business innovation, having established the first North American industry-facing sport tech program — The Next Big Idea in Sport — in 2015 at Ryerson University in partnership with Rogers Communications. She currently is the Founder and Managing Director of the Future of Sport Lab (FSL) a sport innovation lab and sport tech incubator supported by Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment (MLSE). She is also the Ted Rogers Director of Sport Business at the School of Management at Ryerson (TRSM) which she joined in 2013 as the Loretta Rogers Research Chair in Sport Marketing. Bradish has considerable consulting and work experience with a number of leading sport organizations, including the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC)/Vancouver Olympic Organizing Committee (VANOC), Nike Canada and the Vancouver Grizzlies (NBA) as well as has participated and published in premier sport business conferences and outlets throughout North America and globally. She is a proud alumna of Florida State University and the University of Guelph — where she was a member of the Gryphons Varsity Volleyball team (Ryerson Communications, 2020).
Dr. Lou Cowin joined Ryerson University as Executive Director of Athletics and Recreation in August 2019. Previously, she served for 7 years as Vice-President Students at the University of British Columbia, and for 5 years as Warden, Hart House, University of Toronto. Lou previously held Assistant Professor positions at Dalhousie University and Queens University. She holds a Ph.D. in Educational Studies from McGill University, and came to Canada as a M.Sc. international student in 1986 as a Killam Scholar at Dalhousie University.
Greg is a Senior Consultant with Monitor Deloitte based in Toronto. Working with senior leadership teams for leading Canadian businesses, his focus is on corporate and business unit strategy projects in the private and public sector including financial services, healthcare, and other consumer-facing industries. Prior to Deloitte, Greg was an Olympic athlete competing at the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games in the sport of sailing. Greg holds an MBA from Queen’s University and a Bachelor of Commerce from Ryerson University.
Julio is the Assistant, International Scouting for the Toronto Blue Jays. Through contract creation and execution, talent evaluation and identification, financial reimbursement and schedule management, and more, Julio's main focus is to aid the Jays Latin American scouts on the ground in a plethora of ways. Julio serves to bridge the gap, in language and operation, between Latin America and Toronto, while helping oversee scouting processes in the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Colombia, Panama, Mexico, and beyond. Julio graduated from Ryerson University in 2015 with a degree in Bachelor's of Commerce, all while playing on the University’s baseball team.
