Hosted by: Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science

At the Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science (FEAS), we nurture our students to become the innovators and problem solvers who can meet the challenges of tomorrow. While our community is made up of forward-thinking minds, it is our goal to also reflect and celebrate each success along the way.

Over the past 18 months, with the COVID-19 pandemic disrupting life as we knew it, the FEAS community has overcome hurdles, met new expectations, and thrived in the changing environment. From expanding our programs to Cairo, Egypt, to launching a new mentorship program for our alumni, we are excited to celebrate all of FEAS’ undertakings and triumphs.

On September 29th, we invite you to Discover FEAS with Dean Tom Duever. Reflecting on the challenges faced throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Duever will share all that FEAS has accomplished and the successes that have inspired his hopes for this academic year.

Tom Duever is Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science (FEAS) and a Professor of Chemical Engineering at Ryerson University. In his 30-year career as a strategic leader, award-winning instructor and accomplished researcher at two Ontario universities, he has overseen significant facility expansions and program innovations, changing how engineering is taught and practiced.

Since joining Ryerson University in 2014 as Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science, he has introduced new initiatives within the Faculty to enhance the quality of the student experience, including an increase in support for co-operative internship opportunities and the prioritization of career readiness, ensuring students are more fully prepared for the workplace. However, the most important aspect of his role is supporting, encouraging and mentoring others to succeed; inspired by his own struggles as a first-year engineering student. “I decided to give it everything I had,” he says. “So I spent long nights in the library working through every problem in the textbook until I got it.” It is this determined persistence that Duever hopes to pass on to his students.

Tom is a registered Professional Engineer in Ontario, a Fellow of the Chemical Institute of Canada and a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering. He holds PhD, Master’s and Bachelor degrees in chemical engineering from the University of Waterloo. As an internationally recognized researcher, he has over 70 articles in journals and conference proceedings to his credit and is a respected presenter who has shared his research findings and his insights on chemical engineering at more than 80 conferences, lectures and seminars worldwide. He has also supervised the research projects of more than 30 graduate students.
