Executive Summary
During the 2023–24 fiscal year, Toronto Metropolitan University’s (TMU) Office of the Vice-President, Research and Innovation (OVPRI) received total research funding of $95.8 million in support of scholarly, research and creative (SRC) activities. Tri-Agency funding from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) of Canada and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) of Canada totalled $39.9 million, representing a 42% increase over the 2022–23 fiscal period.
TMU faculty were recognized for their expertise and excellence across a wide range of disciplines, receiving numerous honours and accolades, including the induction of new members into the Royal Society of Canada’s College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists for emerging intellectual leadership in their fields.
This year, TMU also gained a second Canada Excellence Research Chair (CERC). Our new CERC in Health Equity and Community Wellbeing will deepen our institutional strength and commitment to health-care research rooted in community practice. In addition to the new CERC, TMU received two new Canada Research Chairs with interdisciplinary approaches to the key thematic research area of health and wellbeing. One of these chairs will expand our research capacity in the emerging field of AI and machine learning as these technologies apply to medical imaging. The other chair will study the role of sex and gender in aging, continuing our investment into research that supports our aging population, a pillar of our health research ecosystem.
TMU faculty continued to demonstrate significant influence in their fields and communities through knowledge mobilization, including through conferences and 1,592 new academic publications.
The OVPRI is pleased to highlight some of the university’s 2023–24 fiscal year SRC activities, which were made possible by its strategic alliances and partnerships.
The OVPRI works collaboratively to support SRC opportunities and excellence for the TMU research community.
