Notice of Intent shared for new graduate programs in packaging science
The Creative School has presented its (PDF file) intent to propose a new Master of Science (MSc) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Packaging Science, to be offered by the School of Graphic Communications Management (GCM). This Notice of Intent (NOI) will be available online for the customary review period of 30 days, until September 4, 2026.
The proposed programs will prepare graduates to respond to emerging challenges in the packaging sector, including environmental sustainability, regulatory change and evolving consumer expectations. Through interdisciplinary graduate education focused on the science, engineering, design and sustainability of packaging systems, the programs will be the first graduate programs in Canada to focus specifically on packaging materials, packaging design, systems design and consumer-packaging interactions.
The MSc program in packaging science will provide advanced professional and research training in packaging materials, packaging systems design, sustainability frameworks, consumer behaviour, and applied research methods. The PhD program in packaging science will build on this foundation by emphasizing advanced, original research, theoretical development, and innovation in packaging systems, preparing graduates for leadership roles in academia, industry, and policy.
Through coursework and independent research, students will develop the analytical, technical and research skills needed to contribute to innovation in packaging systems. Graduates of the programs will be prepared for careers in packaging design, sustainability consulting, regulatory compliance, materials innovation and research and development across sectors including food and beverage, consumer goods, pharmaceuticals, logistics and packaging manufacturing.
More information on the proposed program is available (PDF file) in the NOI.
The TMU community is invited to review the NOI and provide feedback and comments by emailing provost@torontomu.ca before September 4, 2026.
Thank you in advance for your review and input,
