TMU was recognized for sustainability, research output and employer reputation in global university rankings. Here’s how that translates to supporting student success.

  • QS World University Rankings: TMU continues to demonstrate academic excellence after being named one of Canada’s biggest risers.
  • Times Higher Education Impact Ratings: TMU recognized for advancing United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), particularly SDG 1: No Poverty and SDG 5: Gender Equality.
  • Experiential learning: combining academics with hands-on learning opportunities ensures students are career-ready upon graduation.

TMU continues its climb in global rankings, carving out a spot as Canada’s biggest riser over the last two years in the QS World University Rankings. This steady improvement ranks TMU among the top 10 per cent of universities evaluated worldwide. The university performed well on sustainability, citations per faculty and employer reputation.

TMU also ranked in the top 200 universities worldwide in the Times Higher Education Impact Ratings. These ratings measure a university’s progress in advancing the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). The university was recognized in several areas, including ranking in the top 200 for SDG 1: No Poverty, and 94th in SDG 5: Gender Equality.

“This achievement highlights our commitment to academic excellence and pursuit of scholarly, research and creative activities,” says Roberta Iannacito-Provenzano, provost and vice-president, academic. “It’s encouraging to see that TMU is being recognized on the global stage for our commitment to cultivating sustainability, advancing equity, diversity and inclusion, and preparing our students for their future careers.”

Here’s how these achievements translate to supporting the student experience at TMU:

Ensuring students are career-ready

Advancements in technology and the rise of artificial intelligence continuously impact the labour market. Now more than ever, university graduates need to remain adaptable and resilient as they navigate their career paths for years to come.

So how does TMU help students become career-ready? Through hands-on learning, mentorship from industry professionals, and integrating emerging technologies. For example, the Lincoln Alexander School of Law’s Juris Doctor program is a designated Integrated Practice Curriculum (IPC) (external link)  under the Law Society of Ontario (LSO) (external link) . This means that TMU law students gain the skills they need to become a licensed lawyer, without having to complete a traditional 10-month articling period.

Transitioning from campus to career

From day one, TMU prepares students for today’s workforce.

This year, 96.6 per cent of programs included experiential learning like a co-op, internship, or clinical placement. Co-op students in the Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science have the opportunity to work with leading employers like Bombardier Aerospace, Air Canada, Hydro One and IBM Canada. They gain real-world experience that reflects current industry trends.

Helping students find jobs

The Career, Co-op and Student Success (CC&SS) Centre provides dedicated career support. CC&SS helps students explore career options, find jobs and develop their professionalism.

Combining experiential learning and career support leads to successful employment outcomes for graduates. TMU's graduate employment rate for the Class of 2022 was 85.1 per cent within six months of graduating, and 90.5 per cent two years after graduation.

Supporting a holistic student experience

Removing systemic barriers to education enhances the student experience. TMU offers scholarships and bursaries to students from all backgrounds to address financial barriers. Fifty-two per cent of TMU students receive need-based financial aid. There are also work-study opportunities and financial literacy resources available.

Another key approach to enhancing the student experience is to advance gender equality. TMU supports initiatives that advocate for women in science, technology, engineering (external link)  and math fields. Mentorship opportunities are available for equity-deserving students that foster a sense of belonging. TMU aims to support and empower women-identifying and 2SLGBTQ+ communities on campus.

Ultimately, a multifaceted approach is required to support student success. Academic programs rooted in experiential learning prepare graduates for success in the future. TMU will continue to empower students to lead positive change in an ever-evolving world.
