TMU is marking Mzawe Kiing Anishinaabek Giizis / National Indigenous Peoples Month with a full calendar of events, workshops and community gatherings throughout June.

Organized by Crystal Osawamick, Indigenous events and special projects manager, and the Ceremonies team, this year’s programming invites community members to learn, reflect and connect through conversations, teachings, film screenings and cultural experiences. Events are hosted by Indigenous-led offices, faculties and campus partners across TMU.

Anishinaabe Giizhigad / National Indigenous Peoples Day falls on June 21 each year, celebrating the cultures, histories and contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples across Canada. TMU extends that recognition across the entire month of June – recognizing that one day isn’t enough.

Learning and reflection

The month kicks off with the National Indigenous Peoples Month Virtual Launch on June 1. From there, programming includes virtual Anishinaabemowin Bingo - Gindaaswinag (Numbers) and the Indigenous Arts & Crafts Market, spotlighting Indigenous artists and makers.

The Indigenous Art Tour offers guided learning experiences that explore Indigenous art and storytelling across campus.

Community and culture

Outdoor events like the Indigenous Healing Garden Planting Day and Indigenous Trivia In The Garden bring people together in shared campus spaces.

A Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon will give participants a chance to contribute to Indigenous representation online. The Jingle Dress Journey with Abby Carpenter will explore the teachings, history and cultural significance of the jingle dress.

The month wraps up with the Fostering Allyship Tour, encouraging participants to keep learning about Indigenous histories and perspectives long after June ends.

Get involved

Everyone is encouraged to take part and carry those learnings forward beyond the month.
