As TMU begins the search for its sixth chancellor, the community is invited to put forth nominations until March 1.

Toronto Metropolitan University has a history of outstanding, distinguished chancellors whose guidance and character have helped shape the growth of the institution. The chancellor of Toronto Metropolitan University is the ceremonial head of the university and confers all degrees, honorary degrees, diplomas and certificates and is an ex-officio member of the Board of Governors and Senate, advancing the priorities and interests of the university as its ambassador. With Chancellor Janice Fukakusa’s term nearing completion, TMU is seeking its next chancellor and invites all community members to submit nominations for this integral role.

TMU’s outstanding chancellors, including G. Raymond Chang, John Craig Eaton, David Crombie, Lawrence Bloomberg, and most recently Janice Fukakusa, have enhanced the connection between academic programs, research and the public good, and encouraged students and scholars in making an impact on social and economic well-being.

The university's next chancellor will join TMU at a time of significant growth and change:

  • TMU is on track to open a new medical school in Brampton in Fall 2025. The School of Medicine will provide a new model for primary care, one that’s community-driven and intentionally inclusive, and that trains doctors whose cultural awareness and humility are as crucial as their medical skills.
  • In Fall 2020, TMU opened the doors of the new Lincoln Alexander School of Law to the first cohort of law students, providing leading-edge education with a focus on contemporary issues; this first class graduated in June 2023.
  • Research at TMU is on a trajectory of success and growth. Canada’s Top 50 Research Universities 2023 list by Research Infosource ranked TMU among the top five comprehensive research universities in several collaboration and partnership categories, including third in not-for-profit research income growth achieving a 74 percent increase, and fourth in corporate research income growth with a 70 per cent increase between 2018 and 2022.

The chancellor search committee is inviting nominations of individuals whose achievements will inspire our students and scholars, infuse our strategies with confidence, and continue to take TMU forward with strength and spirit.

Candidates should have demonstrated experience in building community partnerships, a connection to both TMU and its vision and values, proven experience in fundraising efforts, and lived experience with diversity, equity and inclusion.
