The Lincoln Alexander School of Law will have a permanent home at 277 Victoria Street. The 11-storey building with 115,000 square feet of space will establish a highly visible presence for the law school at the most vibrant intersection in the country.

Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) acquired two properties last year, including 277 Victoria Street, as an investment in the university’s future and to advance one of its key priorities: providing exceptional student experiences.

"We are very excited about this upcoming campus expansion, to help meet our growing academic needs. 277 Victoria Street is located at an ideal entrance way to our campus and its acquisition supports the university’s ongoing efforts to provide an exceptional learning experience for our students," said Mohamed Lachemi, president and vice-chancellor of TMU.

"We will work with our partners in the Lincoln Alexander School of Law and our broader community to make sure the space is as innovative and inspirational as the law school that will call it home.”

One of the university’s top priorities has been to identify spaces for scholarly, research and creative endeavours. TMU’s Campus Master Plan mentions that the institution’s future campus needs to provide additional square footage for classrooms, teaching and research. The university reviewed academic and research space needs, which showed that the needs of the law school for a permanent home aligned with the newly acquired space at 277 Victoria Street.

Fostering academic, research, creative and entrepreneurial activities

TMU will plan renovations for the new space to transform the building into a vibrant hub that meets the specific needs of law students, faculty and staff. The space will also help enhance the university’s presence at an important entryway into the core campus and create a welcoming entrance on Dundas Street.

“We are thrilled that the law school will have a permanent home at a key entrance to the TMU campus,” said Graham Hudson, interim dean of the Lincoln Alexander School of Law.

“This will be a place where our students, faculty and staff can continue to engage in progressive and innovative legal education befitting the founding mission of the Lincoln Alexander School of Law. An expanded footprint tailored to meet the demands of our Integrated Practice Curriculum will help us attract and train a new generation of lawyers, who are equipped to tackle pressing legal and societal challenges.”

As Canada’s newest law school, it requires facilities such as larger classrooms and dedicated research and academic spaces to ensure continued growth and success. The space at 277 Victoria Street will offer opportunities for the Lincoln Alexander School of Law to deliver academic programming, research, community support, and creative and entrepreneurial initiatives.

As a next step, TMU will begin consultations with the law school community to learn more about future program requirements and their specific needs for the space. Departments across the university will work together to make sure the TMU community is kept informed about progress on the new space.
