The university will launch initiatives to offer support for students, faculty and staff.

In response to a series of events, petitions and concerns in recent days, Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) is undertaking a formal review done by an independent, external expert. This review will determine if any of these actions and incidents are in breach of university policies and procedures including but not limited to the Student Code of Non-Academic Conduct, the Discrimination and Harassment Prevention Policy, the Workplace Civility and Respect Policy, the Statement of Student Rights and Responsibilities and Toronto Metropolitan University’s Statement on Freedom of Speech.

University to undertake series of initiatives focused on education, healing and support

In addition to the review, the university will also be launching a series of supportive initiatives for all students, staff and faculty.

The supportive initiatives will include, but not be limited to, education, trauma and well-being supports, and facilitation. There will also be an emphasis on building awareness of the many resources that are available to the community, ensuring coordination of services for students, staff and faculty, and creating opportunities to hear from the community about both their concerns and their suggestions.

More details on the external review and supportive measures will be shared in the coming days.

Resources and support available to community members

Community members who may need support in managing their well-being in response to the ongoing crisis are encouraged to access the many supports available to them:

  • Students can access well-being services and support through the Centre for Student Development and Counselling.
  • Keep.meSAFE (external link)  provides counselling services for students, with 24/7 access to licensed counsellors via telephone and mobile chat. Mental health care can be provided in over 60 languages and students can access the service from outside of Canada too.
  • Student Care offers support to students navigating a variety of complex factors while they study, including financial and academic as well as physical and mental health challenges. Students are encouraged to connect with them at studentcare@torontomu.ca.
  • Faculty and staff members affected by these troubling events can connect with the Employee and Family Assistance Program for counselling and other supports.
  • There are also several faculty and staff community networks that employees can access for support.

These are very challenging times; it is important that community members continue to support each other, respect each other and seek any of the support that the university has available.
