Hosted by TMU Libraries in collaboration with Chartered Professional Accountants (CPA) of Canada, this workshop is the first in a series designed specifically to help equip you with the knowledge and practical skills to master your personal finances. We’ll bridge the gap between theoretical concepts and real-world responsibilities to help you to make informed financial decisions—from your time in school right into your professional career.
This session lays the groundwork for confident money management in Canada. It begins with an overview of the banking system, including how to choose and use bank accounts and services effectively. Key concepts such as ATMs, debit cards, and credit cards are explained—highlighting their functions, differences, and the impact of transaction fees. The session also explores the importance of establishing a strong credit history, and provides a breakdown of paycheques to clarify payroll deductions. Guidance is offered on filing income tax returns, including when and how to file, and where to access support. Practical tools and resources are introduced to help participants navigate their financial journey with confidence.
These workshops are open to all students, across all programs. No prior knowledge required.
