Toronto, ON – Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) will award honorary doctorates to the late business leader Nadir Mohamed, philanthropist and champion of education Stephen A. Jarislowsky and former National Ballet of Canada artistic director Mavis Staines.

The honorary degrees will be bestowed at three unique ceremonies taking place this October.

Stephen A. Jarislowsky - October 3, 2025

Stephen A. Jarislowsky celebrated his 100th birthday in September. The philanthropist and business leader experienced significant success throughout his career and continues to give back through his foundation. He founded and sold his own company in Montreal and has donated millions to advancing research initiatives across the country, including establishing research chairs to advance education at universities, including TMU.

Jarislowsky resides in Montreal and will receive his honorary Doctorate of Laws at a special ceremony in his home city on October 3.

Nadir Mohamed - October 16, 2025

Nadir Mohamed, who passed away in September, was one of Canada’s most respected business leaders and philanthropists. He was known widely for his tenure as president and CEO of Rogers Communications Inc, where he helped shape the country’s telecommunications landscape. Mohamed was also well-known for sharing his knowledge and experience with the community by serving on the boards of several community and start-up organizations, including TMU’s Board of Governors.

TMU had planned to award an honorary degree to Nadir Mohamed at fall convocation. The university is saddened by his passing and will honour his legacy by awarding Mohamed with an honorary Doctor of Laws posthumously at the convocation ceremony on October 16 at 9:30 a.m. The ceremony will take place at the Mattamy Athletic Centre (50 Carlton St., Toronto).

Mavis Staines - October 17, 2025

As a leader and a ballet teacher she has changed the art form for the better. Her work includes helping ballet move into the 21st century, developing national strategies for inclusive community dance programs and addressing racism in ballet.

Staines will receive her honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts at the convocation ceremony on October 17 at 9:30 a.m. at the Mattamy Athletic Centre (50 Carlton St., Toronto). She will also address graduating students from the Faculty of Arts, The Creative School, and the Yeates School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.
