Orlando Corporation pledges $25 million to match community support for TMU School of Medicine
Today, the Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) School of Medicine—as it officially welcomed its inaugural class of medical students—announced that Orlando Corporation has pledged up to $25 million in a dollar-for-dollar match for donations to the TMU School of Medicine. The incentive gives tremendous momentum to TMU's mission to train a new generation of physicians and increase health-care capacity in Ontario.
“We are profoundly grateful for the philanthropic leadership of Orlando Corporation,” said Mohamed Lachemi, president and vice-chancellor, TMU. “The future physicians launching their studies with us this week hold exceptional promise. Orlando Corporation’s generous pledge will inspire new donors to help realize this promise in a state-of-the-art learning environment in Brampton.”
“Orlando Corporation recognizes that strengthening health care is a shared responsibility at the heart of building caring communities,” said Orlando Corporation President Blair Wolk. “Supporting the education of future physicians will help address a critical shortfall of family practitioners, and we invite everyone to join us to increase access to quality care for all Ontarians. Together, we can build a healthier future.”
The TMU School of Medicine opened the doors of its Brampton facility to 105 resident students in July and, yesterday, welcomed its first cohort of 94 MD students. TMU’s innovative approach to medical education will help address the health-care challenges of the region, and the province, by shaping future-ready doctors dedicated to delivering primary care to those who need it most.
Through its pledge to match donations, Orlando Corporation will be the catalyst of more support, bringing the community together around the new school as it sets out to graduate more doctors who will bring excellence, compassion and innovation to every patient encounter.
Orlando Corporation, Canada’s largest privately owned industrial real estate developer, is a generous donor to numerous causes, particularly institutions dedicated to health care and health-sciences research. This empowering gift to the TMU School of Medicine will help transform the former Bramalea Civic Centre into a dynamic medical learning, teaching and research facility that will ultimately improve the quality of life for families across the province.
