Ryerson University is pleased to announce its expansion into the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region with the launch of a satellite campus in Cairo, Egypt. Ryerson’s Cairo campus, whose physical presence will be facilitated by Universities of Canada in Egypt (external link) , will give local students the opportunity to earn a Ryerson degree in an environment that emulates the Canadian university experience.

“Well known as a community and city builder, Ryerson is moving onto the world stage to deliver smart and scalable solutions to global challenges,” said Mohamed Lachemi, president and vice-chancellor, Ryerson University. “This exciting partnership with Universities of Canada in Egypt, and new educational model, will make Ryerson’s strong academic programming available to more students as we continue to enhance the international scope of our aspirations and influence.”

Ryerson’s Cairo campus will offer select programs through the Faculty of Communication and Design (FCAD) and the Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science (FEAS). FCAD’s degree programming will include Media Production, Sport Media, and Fashion, while FEAS’ offerings will include Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. The first cohort will begin classes in September 2021 and both Faculties intend to expand their degree programming in the future.

“FCAD is a global centre of media and creative invention, and we are proud to offer in Egypt our globally respected programs and innovative education in media and creative industries,” said Charles Falzon, dean, FCAD. “FCAD in Cairo will be equally innovative and dynamic, offering a highly impactful international education that is ideal for innovative and ambitious students in the region who aspire to be future leaders at home and globally.”

“We are very excited to be able to offer our Canadian engineering programs to students in the MENA region through our partnership with Universities of Canada in Egypt,” said Tom Duever, dean, FEAS. “This is the first step in enhancing our global presence and I am enthusiastic about the possibilities.”

Ryerson will oversee academic programming, course quality and admission decisions, as the Cairo campus programs will follow the same curriculum as those offered to students in Canada. All faculty and staff – at least 50 per cent of whom are anticipated to be Canadian citizens – are being hired with Ryerson’s oversight and are subject to Canadian post-secondary hiring standards. Ryerson will also determine tuition fees for programs according to Egyptian market rates.

Further, student residences will be available, and faculty members will have housing options and transportation services arranged for them. Through its existing partnerships, Universities of Canada in Egypt is very adept at onboarding new expatriate and local staff.

“We are thrilled to be bringing one of Canada’s leading universities to Egypt,” said Madgy ELKady, president and chair of the board, Universities of Canada in Egypt. “We are proud of our community, facilities and technology, and we believe that this is the right step forward to shape our future leaders and generations in Egypt, Middle East and Africa towards an inclusive, sustainable and innovative future for all.”

Ryerson’s Cairo campus will also offer a variety of extracurricular activities for students, such as student-run clubs and societies, sports, and group fitness classes. Other activities, designed by Universities of Canada in Egypt’s Student Development Department, include an Orientation Peer Leaders Program, Student Ambassadors Program, and English Community Service Program.
