Ryerson is no different than most other Canadian universities: larger classes are becoming the norm. While some faculty find teaching large classes to be exciting and engaging, other faculty have reported the larger class sizes to be intimidating and challenging. This workshop explores many strategies for teaching large classes where you will hear from instructors who have taught lectures as large as 1100 students. This workshop illustrates several best practices for large class management and participation. We will address questions such as how to keep students actively learning during class time, how to help students develop a sense of community in a large class, what technologies can assist faculty in addressing the challenges of large lectures, and what is the optimal lecture/break structure for a larger size class.
