For decades now, Elder has been building two formidable bodies of work, as an artist working in the experimental tradition and as the author of critical texts on art and cinema. His earlier writing pioneered inquiry into the relationship of embodiment to cinematic form. In recent years his historical-theoretical studies have assumed the task of charting the influence of the cinema on vanguard art movements in the twentieth century. Elder is also award-winning filmmaker (a Governor-General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts, a Canadian Screen Award and a Los Angeles Film Critics Award).
