New gifts

Support from our alumni and donors is creating new opportunities for students in the Faculty of Community Services
September 28, 2021

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, the Faculty of Community Services (FCS) has established the following six new awards and bursaries for students in FCS.

Lisa Barnoff Award

The Lisa Barnoff Award was created by Donette Chin-Loy Chang in honour of Lisa Barnoff, who served as dean of FCS from 2016 to 2021. This award is for an incoming nursing student who is a first-generation student and demonstrates financial need. This award will continue to foster that same spirit and commitment to inclusion in Barnoff’s name. As a first generation student herself, Barnoff is honoured by this award and hopes it will encourage other first-generation students as they embark on their post-secondary journey -- knowing that they are welcomed, valued and belong.

This award will open for applications in Winter 2022.

Lisa Barnoff Award in the Faculty of Community Services

This complementary award was created in honour of Lisa Barnoff through funds raised by faculty and staff in FCS. This award will continue to foster Dean Barnoff’s spirit and commitment to inclusion. Similar to the award created by Donette Chin-Loy Chang, this is an entrance award designated for a first-generation student enrolling in an undergraduate program at FCS (excluding the Daphne Cockwell School of Nursing) and who demonstrates financial need.

Those who wish to make a donation towards this award can make a contribution on the dedicated giving page.

This award will open for applications in Winter 2022.

RPAA Equity in Planning Awards

The Ryerson Planning Alumni Association (RPAA) has made a generous commitment of $53,000 to establish the RPAA Equity in Planning Awards. The funds will provide for a $50,000 endowment and grant awards beginning Fall 2021. This is the third award endowment created by the alumni association at Ryerson and will provide one award to a Black student and one award to an Indigenous student enrolled in the undergraduate program at the School of Urban and Regional Planning. This gift will be matched by the award matching fund program established by former dean Lisa Barnoff at FCS.

TD Bank Travel Fund for midwifery students transferring from Laurentian

TD Bank has committed $2,500 to support midwifery students transferring to Ryerson from Laurentian University in the fall. Laurentian was one of three post-secondary partners in the provincial consortium of midwifery education, and the sudden closure of the program has left a significant impact in northern communities who rely on the program. A ripple effect has been felt among the remaining educational partners to quickly adapt and meet the need.

Abascal Family LatinX Community Changemaker Award

The Abascal Family has made a commitment of $5,000 to create the new Abascal Family LatinX Community Changemaker Award at FCS. This award recognizes and provides financial support to undergraduate LatinX students in FCS who are committed to improving the lives of people in the community. Thanks to the award matching fund program established by former dean Lisa Barnoff, the value of the award will be doubled and made available to students in Fall 2022.

This award will open for applications in Fall 2022.

Ethel Woods Award

The Ethel Woods Award was established in 2018 to recognize and support nursing students who demonstrate potential for excellence in clinical practice. Funded with an initial gift of $5,000, the award was created by professor emerita of nursing Ethel May Woods, who taught for many years at the university and viewed her Ryerson colleagues as her “second family.”

Sadly, Professor Woods passed away in May 2020. In addition to her legacy of promoting excellence in nursing education and clinical practice, she will be remembered for her committed support for future nurses. Through provisions made in her will, Woods donated a portion of her estate to the Daphne Cockwell School of Nursing, ensuring that the award in her name will be endowed and provide support to students in perpetuity.

This award will open for applications in 2023-24.
