TRSM Special students
Non-degree study: Special students
A special student is a non-degree seeker taking individual courses without being admitted to a full program.
Special students include:
People taking a course to meet professional association course requirements
University graduates taking additional classes in order to be qualified for a graduate degree program
Visiting students on a letter of permission from other colleges or universities earning transfer credits
International students enrolled in a recognized joint program with Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU)
How to register
- Download and complete the (PDF file) TRSM Special Student Permission Form (opens in new window)
- Submit the form to trsmadvising@torontomu.ca
- Include one of the following supporting documents:
- Letter of Permission from another university or college that offers Bachelors degrees
- Letter of Academic Evaluation from a licensing body (e.g. Human Resources Professionals Association)
- Letter from a Graduate Program Director recommending qualifying courses for potential admission to a specific graduate program.
Note: If you have already been admitted as a special student within the last six (6) academic terms, you do not need to reapply. You do, however, need to complete step 1 of this process (seeking faculty permission).
Once your application has been approved you can be enrolled (if space is available) by the course department.
Please note:
- Special student enrolment is not guaranteed
- Special students can register once regular program students have completed registration
Rules and restrictions
- If you have received a Required to Withdraw or Permanent Program Withdrawal notice from TMU or any other university, you are not able to register as a special student
- If the course being requested has pre-requisites, applicants will be asked to submit a transcript with the permission form in order to demonstrate that they have the required base knowledge needed for the course.
- If you enrol in a degree program at TMU after taking courses as a special student, the courses may apply toward your degree requirements. However, these credits won't be used in the calculation of your grade point average (GPA) and will not be recorded as graded courses.
- While enrolled as a special student, you are not eligible for transfer credit from another institution. You are also not eligible for a letter of permission to study elsewhere.
- Special students are subject to the same academic standing requirements as students in degree programs.
