A Comparison of the Socioeconomic Status and Housing Characteristics of Aboriginal, Immigrant and Other Canadians © 2007

The purpose of this research paper is to compare the socioecononomic status and the housing situation of the Aboriginal people with the Immigrant population and the non-Aboriginal/non-Immigrant group (other) of Canada based on the 2001 census. The results show that almost 40% of Aboriginals live below the 2000 low income cut off compared to a national average of 17.2%; the Aboriginals also have a higher rate of one person maintainer households. Almost 11 % of Aboriginal homes have seven or more persons, yet 63.9% of Aboriginals homes have six rooms or less and 24% of Aboriginal homes are in need of major repair. When examining tenure at a national level, only 40.2% of Aboriginals own compared to a national average of 71.8%.
