Message from the Vice-President, Research and Innovation

I am pleased to present our 2023–2024 annual report celebrating the scholarly, research and creative (SRC) achievements of our faculty and students. This year has been marked by bold initiatives, growing recognition and meaningful impact across disciplines, reflecting the breadth, depth and excellence of Toronto Metropolitan University’s (TMU) SRC activities.

TMU continues to be recognized and ranked among the top 10 comprehensive research universities by research funding and income growth. As highlighted in this report, our faculty members’ efforts are having impacts across a wide spectrum of disciplines and sectors. These include artistic works, startups, inventions and newly funded projects tackling issues ranging from climate change to children’s rights.

This year, TMU participated in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings for the first time, placing in the top 20 per cent globally. Our research at Urban Water TMU and the Centre for Urban Energy were recognized as providing significant contributions to their fields, illustrating the tangible benefits of our SRC activities to communities and industry alike.

Our new Canada Excellence Research Chair in Health Equity and Community Wellbeing, Karen Soldatic, along with two Canada Research Chairs focused on AI for Medical Imaging (April Khademi) and Sex, Gender and Diversity in Brain Health, Memory and Aging (Natasha Rajah), directly advance institutional priority areas while reinforcing TMU’s approach of combining community engagement with innovation. In addition, the nomination of one of our faculty, Pamela Palmater, a leading voice in Indigenous governance, into the Royal Society of Canada’s College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists, exemplifies the calibre and national influence of TMU researchers.

What drives this progress is the commitment of our faculty to SRC activities that are rigorous, collaborative and designed to make a meaningful difference in society. I invite you to explore the expertise highlighted in this report and to consider opportunities for collaboration as we work together to address complex challenges.
