School of Medicine makes first round admissions offers
First-round medical school offers went out this week to 94 successful candidates who demonstrated academic excellence, community-mindedness and had a depth of well rounded experience.
On Tuesday, May 13, TMU’s School of Medicine marked a major milestone; the first-ever admission offers went out to stand-out applicants for the Undergraduate Medical Education (UGME) program, as the school prepares to launch the first MD class.
“We’re thrilled to share that more than 6,400 students applied to our new Doctor of Medicine program,” says Dr. Teresa Chan, TMU School of Medicine dean and vice-president, medical affairs. “The caliber of applicants has been truly exceptional, making it clear that so many are eager and ready to lead change in medicine.”
Each applicant competed for one of 94 coveted spots in the inaugural MD class. These exceptional candidates demonstrated academic, personal and professional excellence, as well as a commitment to community health. With an average GPA of 3.8, they have proven the skills necessary to succeed in a challenging program.
Recruitment efforts for the inaugural cohort of MD students underwent a rigorous selection process closely connected to the medical school’s aim of increasing primary care capacity in the region. Ninety per cent of candidates reside in Ontario, and of those, 38% hail from Peel Region (including Brampton, Caledon and Mississauga) reflecting regional ties.
“We are confident that our first classes of MD and postgraduate learners will be exactly the kind of physicians our province needs,” says Dr. Chan. “We will ultimately be graduating highly skilled physicians who are also effective communicators, community collaborators, researchers and health-care leaders and advocates.”

The first-round TMU School of Medicine offers of admission were sent out to successful applicants who met rigorous standards, with additional offers to be sent on a rolling basis until the inaugural class has been filled.
The future of health care is here
The TMU School of Medicine is poised to graduate highly competent and qualified physicians to meet the urgent need for health care services in Ontario. With offers going out over the next few weeks, anticipation and excitement are growing over the opening of TMU’s new satellite campus and facilities.
“We can’t wait to meet our inaugural class of MD learners this fall,” says Dr. Chan. “Congratulations to all successful applicants and the incoming cohort who exemplify the future medical professionals and community health advocates our province and our country needs.”
TMU’s School of Medicine will welcome its first cohort of post-graduate medical learners in July and its inaugural MD students this September.
