In celebration of Black culture and achievement, TMU Athletics & Recreation and our university partners are pleased to honour the legacy of Dr. John Carlos as part of our annual Bold, Beautiful & Brilliant, Black History Month Celebrations.

We will host a live speaking engagement where Dr. Carlos will share his story and his commitment to human rights and social justice, a story most Canadians are unaware of.

On October 16, 1968, John Carlos won the Olympic Bronze Medal in the 200 Metres. On that day, alongside Tommie Smith, Carlos made a historic statement by raising a black-gloved fist on the victory podium, a powerful gesture in support of human rights. It was a humanitarian statement against the systemic oppression of Black people in the US and was a defining moment in the history of civil rights activism.

This silent act came at great personal cost. Within hours, both athletes were condemned by the International Olympic Committee. Two days later, they were suspended from the US team resulting in a lifetime Olympic ban. This strong and decisive action also led to countless death threats, but not an ounce of regret.

Beyond his athletic achievements and honorary doctorate recognitions Dr. John Carlos has dedicated his life to humanitarian efforts and civil rights activism.

Live at TMU, Dr. John Carlos will share his courageous story and lifetime commitment of activism.
