Introduction to Theories of Communication
This course introduces students to communication as an area of study and practice. Students will explore communication theory and modes and functions of communication through topics such as interpersonal messages, relationship development, relationship maintenance, influence, group communication, organizational communication, public rhetoric, media and culture, media effects, visual communication, and critical approaches to communication. Course material will incorporate a number of professional communication settings such as policy, law, science, journalism, sports, art, economics, and culture.
