Professional Issues and Communication

This course covers professional issues encountered by child and youth workers, including boundaries, ethics, and the professional status of the discipline. Issues of power, language, diversity and the transition from theory to practice are critically examined. Students enhance interpersonal skills by focusing on the use of self in interaction with children, youth, co-workers and allied professionals. The influence of personal values, attitudes, and interpersonal communication style on individuals and groups, particularly in relation to the workplace, will be explored.
