PhD Candidate, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry

Based in Sweden and originally from Canada, Meghan Donevan works across national and global contexts to address sexual exploitation and maintains active collaborations with partners in Canada. She is a PhD candidate in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Umeå University, where her project examines young people’s attitudes, experiences, and service needs related to online sexual exploitation. She has conducted mixed-methods research, including more than 130 interviews with individuals exploited in pornography, many of whom were first exploited as children.

Alongside her academic work, Meghan serves as research director at Talita, an organization that provides holistic support to women affected by sexual exploitation, and as president of the Coalition for the Abolition of Prostitution, a global network of grassroots and survivor-led organizations. She has also served as an expert to the Swedish Government Inquiry on “Protection, support, and care for individuals subjected to abuse in the production or distribution of pornography” (Dir. 2022:100).

Grounded in empirical evidence and survivors’ lived experiences, her insights and analysis have been pivotal in driving meaningful policy change and strengthening protection and support systems in Sweden and beyond.
