Leadership Task Force
The Leadership Task Force on Generative Artificial Intelligence has been established to guide Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) in navigating the opportunities and challenges presented by rapidly evolving AI technologies. The task force brings together academic leaders, educators, researchers, and administrators to ensure that the university’s approach to generative AI reflects our values of innovation, integrity, equity and inclusion.
The task force provides advice, recommendations, and guidance on the development, implementation, and responsible use of Generative AI across all aspects of university life. Its role is to help TMU harness AI in ways that enhance learning and teaching, strengthen research and creative activity, improve the student experience, and support effective administration and operations, while ensuring compliance with all relevant laws, regulations, and university policies.
The task force is guided by a commitment to:
- Champion responsible innovation by integrating generative AI in ways that advance TMU’s academic mission.
- Support teaching and learning by exploring how AI can enhance pedagogy, creativity, and student success.
- Strengthen research and creative activities by identifying opportunities for discovery and collaboration.
- Enhance the student experience through accessible, equitable and innovative uses of AI.
- Improve university operations by considering how AI can support efficiency, service, and decision-making.
- Uphold integrity and ethics by ensuring AI use aligns with legal requirements, academic integrity, and TMU’s values.

The Learning and Teaching working group will examine the ways in which generative AI is affecting the learning environment at TMU, considering both the opportunities and risks for higher education. The working group will focus on key issues, including academic integrity, grading and assessment, tutoring, and other applications of AI tools for teaching.
This working group is looking at the various ways in which generative AI may enhance and challenge scholarly, research, and creative activities at TMU. Topics for consideration include research ethics and integrity, peer review, policy, infrastructure and resources.
The Administration & Operations working group will consider generative AI and its potential effects on non-academic operations at TMU. Areas for consideration include human resources, marketing and communications, enrolment management, and facilities operations.
Taking a broader look at the role generative AI plays in the lives of students, this working group will examine different aspects of the student experience. Areas of consideration include advising, counselling, digital literacy, appropriate use, recruitment and learning support.

- Principles and framework
- Information about the state of generative AI guidelines, policies, and preparedness at TMU
- Recommendations for best practices and training
- Curated collection of existing training and information resources
- Recommendations for the adoption of generative AI tools
- Identification of critical challenges, opportunities and unanswered questions
The Leadership Task Force shall report to the Executive Group through the Provost and Vice-President, Administration & Operations.
