TMU celebrates Indigenous voices with month-long cultural events
June marks National Indigenous Peoples Month at TMU, honouring Indigenous cultures, traditions and teachings.
June marks Mzawe Kiing Anishinaabek Giizis/National Indigenous Peoples Month at TMU, a time to honour and celebrate the rich cultures, histories and contributions of Indigenous Peoples across Canada.
While National Indigenous Peoples Day falls on June 21, TMU extends its recognition all month long.
A community effort
Crystal Osawamick, manager of Indigenous Events and Special Projects, leads the celebrations. She works alongside Indigenous and non-Indigenous staff from across the university to create this month-long experience.
This ‘organizing circle’ approach reflects TMU's commitment to inclusivity and community engagement.
Learning and engagement opportunities
TMU has planned workshops, art exhibitions and interactive activities throughout June. These events are meant to support the community to reflect on their own understanding.
TMU encourages everyone to set personal learning goals and explore additional resources like the Government of Canada's National Indigenous History Month (external link) page.
June highlights
The month opens with several engaging events that offer different ways to connect and learn.
Interactive workshops will explore Indigenous water teachings. Artist Angela Aula will share Inuit culture and art through an experiential session, and a student/alumni achievement gallery will screen the film, All Sacred Things.
A special Full Moon teaching is open to the entire GTA and TMU community. This event will explore Anishinaabe moon teachings, self-care and well-being.
Additional events continue throughout the month to honour this day of significant cultural importance for Indigenous communities.
The events connect people with Indigenous ways of knowing, creativity and storytelling. They are meant to provide genuine opportunities for the TMU community to learn and grow together.

TMU invites all community members to participate in this month of learning and reflection. These events honour Indigenous heritage and promote ongoing allyship.
