The pandemic has been difficult for varsity athletes as their training and playing seasons have been cancelled or postponed due to safety guidelines and restrictions. Now that mandates are easing up, the Rams are back on the court and on the ice. And despite all of the challenges our varsity athletes have faced, several teams have kicked off playoff competition at the top of their divisions.

“As we head into the OUA quarter finals, the RAMS are in a really strong position,” said Louise Cowin, executive director of Ryerson Athletics and Recreation. “The fact that we are positioned so well has everything to do with the tenacity, resilience and grit of our student athletes, and the leadership, mentorship and belief of our coaches. When we first resumed varsity activity in the fall of 2021, everyone felt grateful to be back in action and have the opportunity to just play.  Now every team wants to win their championship!”

Ryerson’s women’s basketball team ended their regular season undefeated for the first time in program history. The team is ranked fourth in Canada and is beginning their quest for a provincial and national championship with their first playoff game on Saturday, March 19 at 5:00 p.m.

While men’s hockey and both basketball teams are bringing the playoffs to the Mattamy Athletic Centre this week, the Rams men’s volleyball and women’s hockey teams also made playoffs and have been playing away games.

Cheer on the Rams at the MAC

The Mattamy Athletic Centre is open to spectators and Rams fans will have lots to look forward to as they cheer teams on through the playoffs.

On Wednesday, the men’s hockey team will be giving away a pair of Toronto Maple Leafs tickets at their game while the men’s basketball team is doing a half time free throw contest for great prizes.

Saturday’s game starring the undefeated women’s basketball team is sure to be action packed. Ryerson has tapped 4KORNERS (external link)  to hype up the crowd with a special DJ set that evening. As the official DJ for the Toronto Raptors, 4KORNERS has been bringing pump-up jams to more than 20,000 fans at home games since 2005. He will be performing live for fans during the warm-up starting at 5:00 p.m. and throughout the game between 6:00 and 8:00 p.m.

"Women's Basketball is getting more looks now than ever before, and I love it,” said 4KORNERS. “The talent has always been there but with Canadian superstars like Kia Nurse, Natalie Achonwa and more making waves in the WNBA, plus the talk of us maybe getting a team here in Toronto, there's never been a more exciting time for the sport. I'm so pumped to be performing at the women's playoffs this year, it's gonna be FIRE!"

Tickets for students, staff and faculty are free and must be booked in advance on the MAC website (external link)  with access code RAMS. Ryerson alumni get a 50 per cent discount on tickets with promo code RAMSALUMNI.

Vaccine QR codes and OneCards must be shown at the door.
