Ryerson University's V4Lab summer program returns
TORONTO, July 10, 2017 – Ryerson University is proud to announce that its innovative V4Lab summer program is returning, this time in collaboration with the Ontario Science Centre.
V4Lab is a summer program for youth that allows open exploration of technology through a series of technical workshops covering microcontrollers, basic electronics, 3D printing, coding and more, preparing learners for careers in Industry 4.0. Put simply, Industry 4.0 describes a range of emerging technologies forming the fourth industrial revolution, including the internet of things, cloud computing and smart manufacturing.
“Today’s youth have grown up with technology, but it’s imperative that they know to utilize technology to create and build. V4Lab not only gives them the foundation to understand and use technology, but opens their eyes to what is possible in their future,” said Ryerson professor Vincent Hui.
V4Lab runs July 17-21 & July 24-28, 2017, in one-week sessions based on campus at Ryerson. Students aged 12-146 will work in teams on a collaborative art installation celebrating Canada’s 150th year anniversary to be hosted at the Ontario Science Centre’s new Inventorium space. Participants will explore what it means to be Canadian through the use of an open-source electronics platform, other technology and uniquely Canadian datasets, culminating in an interactive public display. Students will also participate in lessons and workshops on technologies, disruptive innovations, research and culture to help participants dream of their futures and contributions to Industry 4.0 and beyond.
“The collaboration with V4Lab is a perfect fit for Inventorium, our new curiosity-driven space, where ingenuity is encouraged through engaging, interactive experiences –not only for youth but for aspiring innovators of all ages,” said Catherine Paisley, Vice-President, Science Education and Science Experience, Ontario Science Centre. “Working with like-minded institutions like Ryerson University allows us – in a very creative, hands-on way – to inspire future generations to lead, thrive and effect positive change in the world.”
