TA/GA Day: In-Person Symposium on Teaching

TA/GA Day is a full day of events for TAs, GAs, and all graduate students interested in professional development in teaching. 

Take away valuable tips, tools, and strategies for carrying out your teaching duties in the upcoming year and have a chance to network with peers.

Re-visit the 2023/24 TA/GA Day programming

This year’s TA/GA Day took place on Monday, August 28, 2023 at the Daphne Cockwell Centre for Health Sciences and featured the following sessions:

Introduction to GTDP programming

An overview of support the Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching provides for TA/GAs, such as TA/GA Orientation, Workshop Series, Graduate Teaching Development Program (GTDP), and Awards.

Dr. Yukari Seko

Dr. Yukari Seko

Dr. Yukari Seko is an assistant professor at the School of Professional Communication and an adjunct scientist at Bloorview Research Institute, Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital. Before joining ProCom, Yukari completed a CIHR-funded postdoctoral fellowship at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health and an SSHRC postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Guelph’s Self-Injury and eMental Health Lab.

Every year, The TA/GA Awards Program recognizes, promotes, and rewards the contributions that teaching and graduate assistants make to enhance the quality of the undergraduate student learning experiences at the university.

The award winners shared their insights on graduate teaching at TMU.

Concurrent Session A | A Semester in the Life of a TA/GA

This workshop offered a valuable opportunity for both new and returning TA/GAs to learn about essential aspects of their role. Topics included TA/GA First Day essentials, contract details, and TA/GA responsibilities as outlined in the CUPE3904 Unit 3 Collective Agreement offer letter. The workshop also covered crucial topics like communication management, academic integrity, and pre-contract preparation.

Concurrent Session B | Thriving as a TA/GA

This session introduced TA/GAs to essential tools for wellness and career development as a graduate instructor. TA/GAs learned how to manage boundaries, maintain the balance between teaching, research, and life, and reflect on and frame their teaching experiences for future employers.
