Inspections and Reports

Workplace inspections are a crucial part of preventing incidents, injuries and illnesses. Regular workplace inspections are an important role of the JHSC in supporting TMU’s commitment to a healthy and safe work environment.

Through critical examination of the workplace, inspections identify and record hazards for corrective action. Workplace inspections at TMU are conducted in compliance by law with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) (external link)  and the Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Policy

All inspections are documented and the findings are discussed in the JHSC meetings and recorded in the minutes. Any deficiencies that need to be addressed or opportunities for improvements are shared with the department leader and Departmental Safety Officer (DSO).

To learn more about the inspection process, including how hazards are categorized, visit Workplace Inspections on TMU’s Environmental Health and Safety website.

Ministry field visit reports

The Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development may at its discretion conduct field visits to a workplace to assess compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) (external link) . EHS acts as the liaison between the university and the Ministry, and facilitates visits.

The visit may be proactive or reactive. Proactive site visits may be to support health-and-safety awareness initiatives and ensure workers and employers understand their rights and responsibilities. A field visit may be reactive in response to an accident, incident, complaint or work refusal.

At the end of any field visit, the inspector will provide a field-visit report to the employer, which must be provided to the JHSC members and made available in the workplace for worker review for a minimum of 14 days.

The most recent field report available is posted on TMU health and safety bulletin boards and the EHS Virtual Bulletin Board.
