Lead Investigators: Dr. Haitian Lu (Faculty of Business, Hong Kong Polytechnic University) and Dr. Kernaghan Webb (Ted Rogers School of Management, Toronto Metropolitan University)

The major research objectives of this project are to better understand the interplay of CSR and the law in two jurisdictions that share a common legal background (i.e., the English common law approach), and that have a common experience in that they are both in the shadow of and are neighbours to major world powers (USA, in the case of Canada, and China, in the case of Hong Kong).  What are the similarities and differences in terms of how the law is used to address CSR issues?  Are there similarities and differences in terms of the role of governments, the private sector and civil society in addressing CSR issues? If so, in what ways?  Are there gaps?  Are there particular law/CSR challenges in the two jurisdictions?  Ultimately, the objective is to contribute to better understanding of different styles and approaches to CSR and the law in the two jurisdictions.
